Here Federal guns kept British warships out of the harbor in 1812. Old Black Rock Fort, from Revolutionary War days, has been restored, and archaeological excavations are in progress. Fort Nathan Hale, from Civil War era, also has been reconstructed. Both offer spectacular views of the harbor. Picnicking. Group guided tours (Memorial Day-Labor Day, daily).
